10:59 pm - Kony
I'm seeing a lot of friends posting the video about Kony. I am also seeing a lot of interesting coverage of the facts about the organization raising money.

What I'm getting is that it's bad on both sides but that no one is coming away clean.

What's your impression?

12:07 pm - A Rental Apartment in Puerto Rico
You may (or may not) recall that over the winter holidays I was in Puerto Rico and keeping myself busy by painting, sanding and cutting something other than a set. Should you or a loved one want a LGBT friendly place to stay in Puerto Rico, this is the apartment I helped to renovate:

Click on the picture for further details on pricing and availability. My icon picture is from the beach in front of this apartment. And rainbows happen frequently.

5:22 pm - Noro Details
Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly
  • Noroviruses are highly contagious, and outbreaks are common due to the ease of transmission.

  • People with norovirus are contagious from the moment they begin feeling ill to at least 3 days and perhaps for as long as 2 weeks after recovery, making control of this disease even more difficult.

  • Norovirus can spread rapidly in closed environments like daycare centers and nursing homes

-from CDC's website

So everyone who has joined the ranks, remember you are still a walking disease vector for at least three days. Act accordingly.

10:17 pm - Depression and Thyroid
This article on depression and the thyroid stuck me as something many of my friends might be curious about as I was. It's an area of exploration that I hadn't heard explored before. Then again, I do not suffer from depression on the same level as some of my friends.

I found the article good food for thought. Especially when it talked about anxiety and stage fright being some of the indicators.

"Dr. Geracioti has used thyroid hormones to treat performers with debilitating stage fright; one high-level musician recovered completely, he said."

9:29 pm - Bare Bones - robotic cameras
Ok, so you know that Bare Bones is next Thursday right? And you know it's full of awesome people who are being directed by people you know and all of that. And I realize that's exactly why you want to come. I do.

WHAT: Theatre@First’s Bare Bones staged reading of “The Oldest Profession” by Paula Vogel
WHEN: One performance only! Thursday, November 17, 8pm
WHERE: Unity Somerville, 6 William Street (corner of College Ave.), Davis Square, Somerville
HOW: Come to the show! The event is unticketed, with a suggested donation of $5.

Visit www.theatreatfirst.org for more info.

SUMMARY
Paula Vogel's The Oldest Profession takes place in New York, just after Reagan's election in 1980. Five elderly prostitutes sit on a park bench, discussing diminishing clientele, increased competition, and aching joints. With wit, compassion and humor, they struggle to adjust to changing circumstances.

Note: The subject matter is not really appropriate for younger children – it would likely be rated PG-13.

I'll be trying out the new robotic cameras to tape the show and you could come and see some cool technology, too! Yes, that's right. Gonna tape this and mix the tape live with the help of robotic cameras.

8:01 pm - Serendipitous Driving
I love my community and today I have had a day of serendipitous car/pedestrian pleasantries. Driving on my way to an event, I was stopped by a pedestrian in the crosswalk carrying a lovely bit of quilt work. As it so happens, it was [info]42itous. I waved, she waved back, smiled, raised her beautiful work and pointed at it, I gave it an energetic and emphatic two thumbs up, we waved again and I wandered on my way. Fortuitous, indeed.

Later, I drove [info]gilana to Harvard Square to pick up the train, I turned the corner at Church Street and was heading back home when I saw the amazing [info]kjc007 on the corner staring at something. I called our her name, she looked up confused as to where the sound was coming from and then when she saw me waving frantically out my window, smiled and crossed the street. I pulled over for a quick moment and collected a hug.

While standing there doing a very brief catching up, I also ran into Cara C. gathered/gave a hug to her as well and felt incredibly blessed.

Three...count them THREE serendipitous friend sighting occasions. I love that it's even possible!

1:56 pm - Distractibility
What I have on my list to do today
• hang curtain in office
• buy rug for porch
• put in extra shelves in cabinet in kitchen.
• change shelves in fridge?
• pick up E, A & J at Airport at 4:30
• polish silver and put some of it away
• move furniture and put down rug on porch
• Unpack another box.
• Pick up USB floppy drive.

What I have actually done
• Folded load of laundry from dryer
• Washed load I forgot in washer last night, again. (Mildew, ew)
• Polished some silver
• Experimented with silver polish on brass doorknobs (it works really well!)
• Noticed windows over one brass doorknob (which was on the back door) needed the paint scraped off the glass
• Scraped the paint off the glass. Boy those windows are dirty.
• Cleaned windows on back door.
• Remembered to put twice washed laundry into dryer.

Sigh. Clearly my lists are subject to my distractibility + my OCD tendencies.

8:30 pm - PSA: Locksmith
Should you ever need a locksmith, and you live near or around Arlington, MA, might I offer up:

Bill Carr Locksmith
39 Stone Road
Arlington, MA
(781) 859-8033

He arrived in a van with his name on it, is a licensed locksmith and has worked in the business for quite some time now. He came over and helped to retro-fit keys to three existing locks, helped to fix my doors so the seasons would stop affecting whether or not they would close and was a real pleasure to do business with. I thought his prices were reasonable and he did excellent work.

And now I have keys that work for all relevant doors. (The irrelevant doors are irrelevant).

current mood: accomplished

12:18 am - And so, it ends.
You know, I am so pleased that after every show, we all leave with the feeling "I just worked with the most AMAZING people." Because man, that part, never gets old.

Might I suggest that Technical Directing a play outdoors, is a challenge. Moving the weekend before your last work day? Not suggested. Taking on a full time job that you have fallen in love with...a blessing but OMG difficult. And choosing the same Time frame to do all this? One of the worst ideas ever. But my crew and my cast each covered for the things I dropped and helped me stay sane throughout.

Thank you to an amazing cast with the best attitude ever, to the hardest working crew who worked their tushes off to pull this all together and to a Director who managed to deal with me when I was well past exhaustion, and pull me back from the edge.

I'm proud of this show and so incredibly pleased to be part of it.

8:48 am - PSA
"The Arlington Police Department, in partnership with the Arlington Youth Health and Safety Coalition, will collect expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Town Day. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., police officials and coalition members will be available to collect unwanted medications at the APD/AYHSC Booth, in front of Library Way."
Since you don't want to stone the fish by flushing them or risk them being sold with your name on them by tossing them out, it's a nice solution.

9:36 am - As You Like It
Philip Henslowe: Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.
Hugh Fennyman: So what do we do?
Philip Henslowe: Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.
Hugh Fennyman: How?
Philip Henslowe: I don't know. It's a mystery.
- From Shakespeare in Love

It is no mystery to me that what makes it work is each and every one of the amazing cast and crew of this show. Last night as we left the security guard in his car in the middle of the field with his flashing lights, I smiled knowing he guarded the dreams of so many people who have each tossed their fortunes together into this adventure. And you know what? It's looking AMAZING!!!

1. If anyone wants to lend a helping hand in today's last efforts to put the finishing touches on, please simply show up in the Seven Hills Park behind the Davis Square T Station (next to The Somerville) after 1pm until Dark.

2. If you think you might be up for spending some time in the park watching the stage for us this week, leave me a comment. We need to organize folks to keep an eye on it.

3. Please get out your picnic blankets and a group of friends and come see it later this week. It's going to be fantastic.

6:33 pm - Kitchen on Common
So last night I enjoyed a fabulous meal with [info]minkrose and [info]blondbaron at Kitchen on Common last night.

The place itself is rather small and reminds me of a cross between a home-style restaurant and a deli due to its layout which is very simple. There are probably 10 tables or so. But the food is well presented and really tasty.

I had a fabulous pork dish that melted in my mouth and came with carrots and greens. I used the bread to sop up the sauces that remained in the bowl. [info]minkrose had some fabulous salmon over a tasty barley risotto and [info]blondbaron had a really tasty red wine braised beef (I think that's what it was) with garlic potatoes and some veggies.

For dessert they had some cookies. [info]blondbaron had the cinnamon while [info]minkrose and I enjoyed the lemon sour cream ones. They had more of a cake-like texture and were delicious!

The meals are simply served although nicely, and the portion sizes seem reasonable (not huge). Plus they have a BYOB policy and the liquor store is next door. If you don't want to break the bank but want some really good comfort food, I strongly suggest giving them a try.

8:15 pm - A fascinating article on a different kind of prison
A cushy Prison Experiment in Norway. I have to admit, I will be VERY curious to see the results of this in the years to come.

a copy of the article without the pictures in case the link goes away. Think of this as a clipping. But go read the original, the pictures help really illustrate the story. )

This arrived via post today from Australia. I have a vague recollection of a joking conversation with someone, but no longer remember who it was with! Whomever you are, thank you for the absolutely fabulous shiny! (It is shiny and pretty and addressed to me!!!!! A very merry un-birthday, indeed!)

It's made me very happy!

EDIT: Mystery solved. It's a penpal I have who normally lives in Brisbane. He's completely wonderful and awesome. Thank you, Mike!
